It’s that time of year again. Gamescom is nearly upon us. For the uninitiated, Gamescom is a huge gaming trade show held annually in Germany. This year, Microsoft has announced a major Xbox presence throughout the event. All told, four streams will highlight upcoming Xbox games.

The first is the opening night livestream. This stream isn’t Xbox-centric, but we’re expecting some relevant news during the keynote. The event kicks off on August 20 at 2PM ET and it will be available via the Gamescom YouTube page and the official Twitch page. The event’s website will also host a stream or, you know, just click play directly below this sentence.

After that, there will be three streams from Xbox, each focusing on a unique slate of upcoming games. You can watch all of them via the Xbox YouTube page or the official Twitch page. The company hasn’t said how long each stream will last, but it’ll be popping up individual trailers after the fact.

The first one goes down on August 21 at 9AM ET. Xbox has announced an array of games that’ll get covered here. These include Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, the upcoming expansion Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, Atomfall and the long-awaited Starfield DLC.

The next stream starts on August 22 at 9AM ET. This one will spotlight Star Wars Outlaws, which actually hits store shelves at the end of the month. The stream will also feature trailers or information for Towerborne, Little Nightmares 3 and Fallout 76: Milepost Zero, among others.

August 23 at 9AM ET brings the final stream. This is likely to be the most exciting one for many Xbox fans. There will be news about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Avowed, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Tails of Iron 2 and a whole lot more.

That’s it! Four streams. If the idea of remembering when and where to watch all of these events gives you the anxious sweats, just keep this page open. Beyond that, we’ll have separate posts for all of the big news from Gamescom.

iPhone 16 Pro: latest news, rumors, potential AI features, and everything we know so far https://victoryscores.org/iphone-16-pro-latest-news-rumors-potential-ai-features-and-everything-we-know-so-far/ https://victoryscores.org/iphone-16-pro-latest-news-rumors-potential-ai-features-and-everything-we-know-so-far/#respond Tue, 20 Aug 2024 11:07:51 +0000 https://victoryscores.org/?p=72416

The iPhone 16 Pro looks set to be Apple’s flagship iPhone model in 2024, with the four-pronged iPhone 16 line almost certain to hit shelves later this year.

It’s been nine months since the launch of the excellent iPhone 15 Pro, so we’re now hearing plenty of rumors concerning the next generation of Apple’s best iPhones. Indeed, many of these rumors are now consistent, and in this guide, we’ve pulled together the leaks with the most credence.

For more iPhone 16 info, our iPhone 16 hub contains all you need to know about the base model iPhone 16, while our iOS 18 page details the iPhone 16-compatible software.

Speaking of which, Apple’s WWDC 2024 has been and gone, but it not only saw the reveal of iOS 18 with a slew of new features, the keynote also introed Apple Intelligence and a smarter Siri. From that we can glean that the iPhone 16 Pro, alongside the iPhone 16 Pro Max, could come with a host of AI-centric features, such as smart photo editing and a capable Siri embedded into native apps.

So read on for everything we know so far about the rumored iPhone 16 Pro and what we’d like to see.

iPhone 16 Pro latest rumors and newsiPhone 16 Pro release date speculationLikely to launch in the first half of September 2024Will probably ship a week or so later

Apple hasn’t yet shared official iPhone 16 Pro release date information, but using the company’s previous iPhone release strategies as points of reference, we can make an educated guess as to when the iPhone 16 Pro will land.

The iPhone 15 line was officially unveiled on September 12, 2023 before going on sale just over a week later on September 22.. Apple generally picks the first or second week of September for its annual iPhone launches, typically opting for a Tuesday or Wednesday. We therefore expect the iPhone 16 Pro to be revealed – alongside the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro Max – on September 3, 4, 10 or 11 this year, with all four phones going on sale around a week later.

Leaker Mark Gurman specifically points to September 10, and notes that even though Apple Intelligence has been delayed until October, the iPhone 16 line apparently won’t be.

iPhone 16 Pro price predictionsLikely to cost at least $999 / £999 / AU$1,849

As with its release date, we’re unlikely to hear confirmation of the iPhone 16 Pro’s price until Apple actually reveals the phone in September, but we can make some early predictions based on the iPhone 15 Pro’s launch price.

Swipe to scroll horizontally

Due to changes in Apple’s chipset manufacturing process, some analysts predict that the iPhone 16 line could actually be cheaper than the iPhone 15 line, meaning the iPhone 16 Pro might cost less than the $999 / £999 / AU$1,849 starting price of its predecessor.

For our money, though, the opposite will be true, not least because production costs are continuing to rise. According to a recent Nikkei Asia report, the iPhone 15 Pro Max costs Apple $558 to produce; a 12% increase over the equivalent production cost of the ‌iPhone 14 Pro Max. Those figures look set to worsen for the iPhone 16 line, meaning the iPhone 16 Pro is likely to cost at least as much as the iPhone 15 Pro.

On top of that, we’ve heard that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max might have more expensive cameras (more on these later) than their respective predecessors, which could conceivably give Apple a reason to inflate their prices.

That’s unfortunate, and might also backfire on Apple, since a survey has found that price trumps everything else, including AI and screen size increases, in whether people will buy an iPhone 16 model.

iPhone 16 Pro design and display rumors

The iPhone 15 Pro sports a 6.1-inch display Tipped for a larger 6.3-inch display… and therefore a taller and narrower frame

There could be significant changes for the iPhone 16 Pro’s design, as back in early 2023, rumors emerged to suggest that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Ultra will be noticeably bigger than their iPhone 15 equivalents, with serial Apple tipster Ross Young claiming that the iPhone 16 Pro will boast a 6.3-inch screen, rather than the 6.1-inch screen we’ve become accustomed to seeing.

Young then followed up this suggestion a few months later with the claim that the iPhone 16 Pro would be taller and narrower than the iPhone 15 Pro, sporting an aspect ratio of 19.6:9, rather than 19.5:9.

Based on almost all of the iPhone 16 Pro leaks, rumors, renders and case molds we’ve come across since then, this claim seems accurate, so the iPhone 16 Pro will almost certainly arrive bearing a 6.3-inch display – the first of its kind on an iPhone.

The below MacRumors render shows how the iPhone 16 Pro might stack up alongside the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which is also tipped for a size increase.

An unofficial render of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max

An unofficial render of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max

As for the other display-related rumors, one report by South Korean publication The Elec claims that the iPhone 16 Pro will have its Face ID components hidden under the screen, rather like how many of the best Android phones now have under-display fingerprint scanners. At present, the iPhone 15 Pro’s Face ID components are housed in the Dynamic Island.

The Elec also reports that both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will sport ‘Multi-Lens Array” (MLA) AMOLED displays, similar to those used by Samsung on its recent flagship phones, and TV manufacturer LG in its best OLED TVs. Presumably, this technology would give the iPhone 16 Pro (and its larger sibling) the brightest screen ever seen on an iPhone, which we’re excited to lay our eyes on.

Indeed, a separate rumor has suggested that the display on the iPhone 16 Pro is going to be some 20% brighter than the screen on the iPhone 15 Pro: up to 1,200 nits for standard (SDR) brightness. That particular figure has been the same since the iPhone 13 Pro.

We’ve also heard that the iPhone 16 Pro could have smaller bezels, with one source saying that they’ll be 1.2mm, down from 1.71mm on the iPhone 15 Pro.

The iPhone 16 Pro’s Face ID components could sit under the display

On the design front, it’s safe to expect that the iPhone 15 Pro’s titanium frame, USB-C port and Action button will all return on the iPhone 16 Pro, though we could also see Apple debut solid-state (i.e. non-physical) buttons on its upcoming flagships.

Prior to its release, the iPhone 15 Pro was widely tipped to get capacitive volume and power buttons, before Apple reportedly u-turned on its decision to include capacitive buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro due to time constraints. Then, we heard that the iPhone 16 might feature an all-new capacitive button, known internally as the “Capture” button, while the rest of the phone’s buttons remain physical.

Now, the latest intelligence suggests that all four iPhone 16 buttons – that’s the Action button, Power button, both volume buttons and a mysterious new “Capture” button – on all four iPhone 16 models will be capacitive, with Apple ready to abandon traditional physical buttons across the board.

AppleInsider notes that Apple’s internal codename for the capacitive transformation of all iPhone 16 buttons is “Project Bongo”. Previously, “Project Atlas” had referred to the capacitive transformation of the Action button, exclusively, so it seems as though the company is finally moving ahead with a full-scale move to solid-state buttons – at least for future iPhone models. We can’t say for certain that every button on the iPhone 16 Pro will be capacitive, but it’s looking like at least one button will be.

Going back to that Capture button rumor, it’s thought that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will get a brand new button for performing some kind of camera-related task. The source of this rumor hasn’t said what the purpose of this new button might be, but a more recent leak points to the Capture button being a dedicated video recording button.

iPhone 16 Pro color rumors

A leaked photo of three iPhone 16 Pro Max dummy units

As for the iPhone 16 Pro’s colors, one leak has suggested that the iPhone 16 Pro will be available in Space Black, White, Gray and Rose, which are similar to the iPhone 15 Pro’s colors, save for Rose, which will reportedly replace Titanium Blue.

We’ve since heard basically the same selection from another source, who claims that the iPhone 16 Pro’s colors will include black, white (or potentially silver), rose, and gray (which they believe will be sold as ‘Natural Titanium’).

All of those colors except rose have also now been shown in a leaked iPhone 16 Pro Max photo, which you can see above.

The absence of rose there might be telling though, because a more recent leak suggests that rather than rose, the iPhone 16 Pro might instead come in a brown or bronze shade (as well as the other leaked colors above).

A second leak has echoed this, though claimed that this iPhone 16 Pro color might be more of a dark gold, possibly called ‘Desert Titanium’.

iPhone 16 Pro camera rumors

The iPhone 15 Pro’s rear camera array Improvements expected for telephoto and ultra-wideCould inherit the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s periscope lens

For a detailed look at what to expect from the iPhone 16 Pro’s camera, head over to our iPhone 16 camera predictions guide. Below, though, we’ll round up the key rumors.

Like its predecessor, the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to boast three rear cameras and one front-facing camera, but some major upgrades could be on the cards. Specifically, the iPhone 16 Pro is tipped to get the following lenses:

Swipe to scroll horizontally
iPhone 16 Pro camera specs (rumored)Main camera:48MP, f/1.8, 1/1.14-inchUltra-wide camera:48MP, 1/2.6-inchTelephoto camera:12MP, f/2.8, 1/3.06-inch, 120mm (5x optical zoom)Front camera: 12MP, f/1.9, 1/3.6-inch

The rumors so far point towards the iPhone 16 Pro getting the 5x periscope camera seen on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. That would give the 16 Pro a nice upgrade over the current 3x optical zoom telephoto camera found on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. We’ve heard multiple times that the iPhone 16 Pro will get this telephoto snapper, so it’s looking likely.

The second major upgrade will reportedly come to the iPhone 16 Pro’s ultra-wide camera, which could be 48MP this year, up from 12MP on the iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone 16 Pro might also have a stacked camera design, which would supposedly boost low light performance.

The iPhone 16 Pro’s main camera looks set to remain unchanged, as does its front-facing camera. But we wouldn’t be surprised to see some minor sensor size adjustments announced come September.

All of the above leaks have appeared in one place now too, with a source claiming that the iPhone 16 Pro will have a 48MP ultra-wide camera and a 5x telephoto, but with no change to the main camera.

iPhone 16 Pro specs and feature rumors

An iPhone on an orange background showing Siri

The iPhone 16 Pro will likely play host to Apple’s iOS 18 upgrades Tipped for an AI-focused A18 Pro chipset8GB RAM likelyCould get a 2TB maximum storage option

As with the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 16 Pro’s specs will likely include 8GB of RAM, and it’s safe to assume that the new phone will be powered by a successor to Apple’s A17 Pro chipset, which we’ll call the A18 Pro for now. Indeed, one leak has specifically mentioned that the A18 Pro will be paired with 8GB of RAM in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.

And given iOS 18 is tipped to be the ‘biggest’ software update in iPhone history due to its focus on revolutionizing age-old iPhone elements using AI, and at least some of these new AI features could be exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. This is because the A18 Pro chipset powering both phones might have significantly more cores for its Neural Engine, making them better suited to demanding, on-device AI tasks.

Sadly though, just having 8GB of RAM might limit the iPhone 16 Pro’s AI capabilities according to one leak. As such, now, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has reported that we may not see the biggest Siri upgrades arrive until next year, which could mean waiting for an iPhone 17.

As for other iPhone 16 Pro features, it might also support Wi-Fi 7 and have a new 5G modem, which would presumably allow for faster data speeds. We’ve heard talk of Wi-Fi 7 from multiple sources now, and this is potentially four times faster than the Wi-Fi 6E of current models.

On the storage front, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are tipped to top out at 2TB, which is double the maximum storage capacity of their respective predecessors.

And for battery, we’ve heard that the iPhone 16 Pro might have a 3,355mAh battery, which would be 2% bigger than the 3,290mAh battery in the current Pro model. That said, another source has instead put the iPhone 16 Plus’s battery at 3,577mAh.

In either case that’s not much of an upgrade, but charging could be in for a bigger boost, as the iPhone 16 Pro might have 40W charging, in place of the roughly 27W of the iPhone 15 Pro, as well as 20W wireless charging (up from 15W on the iPhone 15 Pro).

The iPhone 16 Pro could also have a graphene heat sink and a metal battery housing, to help keep it cool.

One thing to bear in mind is that while the tipped upgrades for the iPhone 16 are attention-grabbing, a recent rumor touting the iPhone 17’s potential specs could make itthe phone range worth waiting for.

The iPhone 16 Plus probably won’t be the most popular phone in the iPhone 16 line. In fact, based on past form it will likely be the least popular, with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max probably set to take the top spot in sales, but this could still be an exciting handset.

Thanks to leaks and rumors we already have a good idea of what to expect from the iPhone 16 Plus, even though it probably won’t land until September. So below you’ll find everything we’ve heard so far, including the rumored release date, price, design, and specs.

We’re sure to hear plenty more rumors about this phone ahead of launch though, and we’ll be collecting them all here. As such, keep checking back if you want the most complete possible picture of the iPhone 16 Plus pre-launch.

The iPhone 15 Plus Likely to be announced in the first half of SeptemberShould ship before the end of SeptemberMay cost around $899 / £899 / AU$1,649

Based on past form, the iPhone 16 Plus will almost certainly be announced during the first or second week of September – probably on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Pre-orders will likely open on the Friday, and the iPhone 16 Plus’s release date will probably be the following Friday, meaning that it will be in buyers’ hands before the end of September; according to reliable leaker Mark Gurman, the iPhone 16 series will most likely land on September 10.

As for the iPhone 16 Plus price, the phone could cost a similar amount to the iPhone 15 Plus, which starts at $899 / £899 / AU$1,649. However, it could also cost slightly more, and there’s even a chance it will cost less.

According to a Nikkei Asia report, high production costs could push the price of the iPhone 16 line up, though the publication doesn’t say how much by.

On the other hand, a rumored change in the manufacturing process for Apple’s smartphone chipsets could lead to a lower price. In either case though, we wouldn’t expect a drastic difference.

Still, if the price is higher this year, that could be a problem, as a survey has found that potential buyers consider an affordable price as the biggest factor in whether they upgrade.

Do bear in mind that although the tipped upgrades for the iPhone 16 may be compelling, a rumor touting the iPhone 17’s potential specs mean it could be the phone range worth waiting for.

iPhone 16 Plus: expected design

iPhone 15 Plus review back angled

The iPhone 15 Plus Could have a new ‘Capture button’May include the Action button from the iPhone 15 ProThe cameras could be arranged vertically

For the iPhone 16 Plus design, one of the biggest changes we might see on the iPhone 16 Plus is to the camera arrangement, which this year could see the lenses arranged vertically rather than diagonally. We first heard this back in May 2023, but since then an iPhone 16 component leak and iPhone 16 molds have backed this up, by showing this design.

We’ve also seen this design in leaked iPhone 16 prototype images, which you can see below. These show three designs that were apparently under consideration, of which the one in black is expected to launch, though all have vertical cameras.

Since then, a set of iPhone 16 series dummy units has leaked, which you can see below. Another similar iPhone 16 series dummy unit photo has also emerged, and in both cases these show a vertical camera layout for the iPhone 16 Plus.

Some of these images also show two new buttons – there’s an Action button where the mute switch used to be, as can already be found on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and more interestingly there’s a new button under the power key, rumored to be called a ‘Capture button’.

This new button will apparently be dedicated to shooting videos according to one source, with another adding that the Capture button will let you zoom the camera in and out with a swipe, while a light press will focus it, and a hard press will take a photo or start recording a video.

The same source claims that the Capture button will be mechanical, which is at odds with previous leaks saying the Capture button will be capacitive.

As for the iPhone 16 Plus’s colors, one leak suggests it will come in pink, yellow, blue, green, black, white, and purple shades, while another more credible iPhone 16 Plus colors leak points to black, green, pink, blue, and white shades.

That second selection of iPhone 16 shades has since popped up in a photo of dummy units, which you can see above.

We’ve also heard that the iPhone 16 Plus might use color-infused glass like its predecessor.

The iPhone 15 Plus Rumored to have a 6.7-inch displayA 60Hz refresh rate is rumoredMight have a brighter screen than the iPhone 15 Plus

The iPhone 16 Plus might not see any major display changes, with a 6.7-inch screen rumored for this phone, just like the iPhone 15 Plus has.

Sadly, the same source also says that the iPhone 16 Plus will once again be stuck with a 60Hz refresh rate.

We have however heard that the iPhone 16 Plus might at least have a brighter screen than its 2,000-nit predecessor, and the iPhone 16 Plus might also have smaller bezels around the display.

iPhone 16 Plus: expected cameras

iPhone 15 Plus review camera

The iPhone 15 Plus Reportedly a 12MP ultra-wide camera like last yearProbably the same 48MP main and 12MP selfie cameras tooMight be able to record spatial video

So far we haven’t head much about the iPhone 16 Plus’s cameras, but that’s probably because there might not be any real changes to them.

According to analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 16 Plus will have a 12MP ultra-wide camera, just like the iPhone 15 Plus does. They don’t mention the main snapper, but since that got an upgrade to 48MP last year, we wouldn’t expect further upgrades this year.

And nor do we expect any additional lenses, as leaks haven’t mentioned a third lens, and leaked imagery shows just two – so if you want a telephoto camera, you’ll probably have to pick one of the Pro models.

There’s no news on the iPhone 16 Plus’s front-facing camera either, but there’s a good chance it will be 12MP like last year, especially as even the iPhone 15 Pro Max only has a 12MP selfie camera.

There may be some upgrades to the camera software and functionality though, including the ability to shoot spatial video for use with an Apple Vision Pro. It’s speculated that the rumored move to a vertical lens arrangement is to allow for this.

iPhone 16 Plus: expected specs and features

iPhone 15 Plus review back angled corner alt

The iPhone 15 Plus Rumored to have an A18 chipsetCould have 8GB of RAMThe battery might be smaller this year

There’s some uncertainty over the iPhone 16 Plus’s specs and the iPhone 16 Plus’s features, and in particular its chipset. The iPhone 15 Plus has the A16 Bionic, inherited from the previous year’s Pro models. So if Apple continues that pattern, then it would make sense for the iPhone 16 Plus to have an A17 Pro, which you’ll currently find in the iPhone 15 Pro line.

We’ve specifically heard the A17 Pro mentioned in an iPhone 16 Plus leak, but a slightly more recent leak points to all four expected iPhone 16 models getting an A18 chipset.

In which case, the iPhone 16 Plus could get a serious power upgrade over its predecessor – though it’s possible that there will be multiple versions of the A18. So, for example, the iPhone 16 Plus might get the standard A18, while the iPhone 16 Pro gets an A18 Pro. Either way though, this should be more powerful than the A17 Pro.

That said, it might not be drastically more powerful, with one leak suggesting the rumored A18 Pro will be 10% faster than the A17 Pro, and another saying it might be less powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which is likely to power Android rivals.

The A18 Pro reportedly also won’t support speedy LPDDR6 RAM, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 might.

Speaking of RAM, the iPhone 16 Plus might have 8GB of the stuff, up from 6GB in the iPhone 15 Plus. We’ve heard talk of 8GB of RAM for the iPhone 16 Plus multiple times now, and we’ve also heard that the iPhone 16 – and therefore probably also the iPhone 16 Plus – might start at 256GB of storage, which is double its predecessor.

iPhone 15 Plus review Dynamic Island

The iPhone 15 Plus

This increase in RAM, storage, and power could in part be to help with AI, which Apple is expected to make a big play for this year, even though a tipped 8GB of RAM might not be enough to truly make the most of AI.

Given WWDC 2024 saw the introduction of Apple Intelligence, we can be fairly confident the iPhone 16 Plus and the rest of the iPhone 16 range will have AI-powered features and a smarter Siri. Such features could necessitate a new and more powerful A-sereis chipset.

There could be bad news for the phone’s battery though, as according to one leak the iPhone 16 Plus will have a roughly 9% smaller battery than its predecessor.

The exact capacity of the iPhone 16 Plus’s battery will apparently be 4,006mAh (down from 4,383mAh), which is something we’ve now heard from multiple sources, so it’s likely true. That said, the same sources say the other iPhone 16 models will have larger batteries than their predecessors; it would be odd if Apple would reduce just the Plus model’s.

Still, the iPhone 16 Plus might at least benefit from a graphene heat sink, which would help keep it cool.

We’ve also heard that the iPhone 16 Plus might have improved microphones, so this upgraded Siri can hear and understand your requests better.

While the specs of the iPhone 16 line are sure to increase relative to the iPhone 15 series, it’s less clear whether their prices will also increase or not.

Some years the prices go up, others they don’t, and there’s even an outside chance the prices could go down. Adding further complications is the fact that Apple will sometimes increase the prices in some regions and not others.

So we can’t yet say with any certainty what price you’ll have to pay for the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Plus, the iPhone 16 Pro, or the iPhone 16 Pro Max. That said, between rumors and past form, we can make some predictions.

You’ll find these below, and they may well be of interest, since a survey has found that price is the biggest factor in whether people will buy an iPhone 16 model.

iPhone 16 price predictions

The iPhone 15

A good place to start when predicting a phone’s price is the price of the previous model, and you can see how much the iPhone 15 costs in different configurations in the chart below.

iPhone 15 pricesStorageUS priceUK priceAU price128GB$799£799AU$1,499256GB$899£899AU$1,699512GB$1,099£1,099AU$2,049

Apple isn’t usually one to lower prices for new models, so it’s likely that you’ll be paying at least this much for the iPhone 16. But it’s not impossible that the price will be lower, especially as a report from mid-2023 suggested Apple would switch its A17 Pro chipset to a more affordable production process at some point this year.

That’s relevant because the A17 Pro is likely to power the standard iPhone 16, and if Apple reduces the cost of producing the chipset, it’s possible the company would also make the phone cheaper for customers.

We doubt that though. More likely Apple would pocket the savings or put them towards other improvements, and anyway this is an old leak, so may not be accurate.

More likely, we’ll see a price increase, especially as a report from October 2023 claimed that production costs for the iPhone 15 line are higher than for the iPhone 14 series.

Despite that, Apple broadly kept prices the same with the latest phones, but if production costs continue to rise then a price increase for the next handsets seems likely.

We don’t expect a dramatic increase, but somewhere between the iPhone 15’s starting price of $799 / £799 / AU$1,499 and a starting price of around $899 / £899 / AU$1,649 is our best guess for the iPhone 16.

However, the same factors could affect pricing here as with the standard iPhone 16, which is to say that if the chipset gets cheaper (as has been rumored) then the price might decrease. But if production costs rise (as they may well do given that they seemingly did last year) then the price is likely to be increased, at least in some regions.

In that case, at a guess the starting price could be as high as $999 / £999 / AU$1,799. We’d think that’s more likely than a price drop.

iPhone 16 Pro price predictions

The iPhone 15 Pro

While it’s certainly possible that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will increase in price, it looks even more likely that the iPhone 16 Pro will. We’ll get to why in a moment, but first let’s look at how much the iPhone 15 Pro costs – you can see full pricing for it in the chart below.

iPhone 15 Pro pricesStorageUS priceUK priceAU price128GB$999£999AU$1,849256GB$1,099£1,099AU$2,049512GB$1,299£1,299AU$2,3991TB$1,499£1,499AU$2,749

So this is probably the minimum that the iPhone 16 Pro will cost, but there’s every chance that it will cost more. For one thing, the cheaper chipset that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus might get (detailed above) won’t be coming to the iPhone 16 Pro, with this phone almost certainly set for a new – and pricey – A18 Pro chipset.

So currently no leaks suggest any sort of price drop, but with rising production costs across the iPhone 15 line, the price could well increase.

On top of which, one leak points to the iPhone 16 Pro Max – and potentially also the iPhone 16 Pro – having a new type of camera lens. This lens would come with some advantages but would also reportedly cost more to make – an increase which could well be added to the price of the phone.

So while we’d think the iPhone 16 Pro will cost at least $999 / £999 / AU$1,849, there’s a high chance it will cost more – our guess is that we could see a starting price of around $1,099 / £1,099 / AU$1,999.

iPhone 16 Pro Max price predictions

iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro Max

Of all the iPhone 16 models it’s the iPhone 16 Pro Max that’s most likely to get a price increase relative to its predecessor.

The same largely applies here as with the iPhone 16 Pro – which is to say that no leaks point to a lower price, and rising production costs may well mean a price increase, especially as one leak (detailed above) has specifically suggested that it might use a more expensive camera lens.

So how much are we talking? Well, at a minimum we’d think the iPhone 16 Pro Max will cost the same as the iPhone 15 Pro Max, prices for which you can see in the chart above.

But based on possibly pricier camera lenses and general rising production costs, we’d think a starting price of around $1,299 / £1,299 / AU$2,349 might be more likely.

And there’s also talk of an iPhone 16 Ultra, which might launch either instead of or as well as the iPhone 16 Pro Max. We’re not at all sure we’ll actually see this, but if we do then that’s sure to cost more than the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

That might come as bad news, since a survey has found that price is the biggest factor in potential iPhone 16 series purchases, but it seems inevitable.

No iPhone 16 prices have been revealed just yet of course, but based on the previous models coupled with leaks and rumors, we can confidently say that the upcoming Pro models will cost a lot.

In fact, we can get more specific than that, so below you’ll find our predicted pricing for the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

iPhone 16 Pro price predictions

iPhone 15 Pro review front angled handheld

The iPhone 15 Pro

To begin with, it’s worth looking at what the iPhone 15 Pro costs, as that’s likely to be the minimum price Apple will charge for the iPhone 16 Pro.

The iPhone 15 Pro then starts at $999 / £999 / AU$1,849, but you can see full pricing for each configuration in the chart below.

So will the iPhone 16 Pro mirror this? It’s quite possible, but if anything this phone might cost even more than the current model.

After all, leaks suggest lots of upgrades are coming to the iPhone 16 Pro’s specs. It could have a larger screen for example, along with a new A18 Pro chipset, and new lenses for its ultra-wide and telephoto cameras.

In fact, we’ve specifically heard that the iPhone 16 Pro’s camera lenses might cost more to make than those of the iPhone 15 Pro. So that all rather suggests the price might increase.

That said, production costs also rose with the iPhone 15 line, yet Apple kept pricing similar to that of the iPhone 14 series (with some slight variation depending on your region). So an argument could be made that Apple might repeat that and keep pricing the same again – but we’d be more inclined to say a price rise is overdue.

So then, it’s almost out of the question that the iPhone 16 Pro will cost less than $999 / £999 / AU$1,849, and while it might carry roughly that price tag, we wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was a little more expensive – perhaps starting at around $1,099 / £1,099 / AU$1,999.

iPhone 16 Pro Max price predictions

iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro Max

For the most part, the same leaks and predictions apply to the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s price as for the iPhone 16 Pro’s price, but let’s start with what the iPhone 15 Pro Max retails for.

This phone starts at $1,199.99 / £1,199 / AU$2,199, so that can be seen as the likely minimum you’ll pay for the iPhone 16 Pro Max – you can see full pricing for the iPhone 15 Pro Max in the chart below.

But as with the iPhone 16 Pro, we reckon there’s a strong chance the upcoming phone will be priced higher than the current model.

And that’s for the same reasons as with the iPhone 16 Pro, namely that with rising production costs a price rise is likely due from Apple’s perspective, and the costs involved in building the iPhone 16 Pro Max might increase even more than those for the iPhone 16 Pro.

This phone is rumored to have a mammoth 6.9-inch display, along with the same A18 Pro chipset as its smaller sibling. It’s also rumored to have upgraded cameras – including possibly a new ‘super telephoto’ snapper, which could be enormously expensive. Either way, as with the iPhone 16 Pro it’s rumored that the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s cameras will include a new – and pricey – type of lens.

Some leaks have also referred to an iPhone Ultra, which could be a different handset, but might alternatively be another name for the iPhone 16 Pro Max – and whether it launches with Ultra in the name or not, the fact that such a name change is even being whispered of suggests this could be a huge upgrade. And with huge upgrades can come huge prices.

That said, we doubt Apple will go overboard with any price increases, especially if this does continue to carry Pro Max branding. So our guess is a starting price of up to around $1,199 / £1,199 / AU$2,199.

We should find out the exact pricing before too long, as the iPhone 16 release date is likely to be in September.

The Morning After: Google apologizes over its Pixel influencer demands https://victoryscores.org/the-morning-after-google-apologizes-over-its-pixel-influencer-demands/ https://victoryscores.org/the-morning-after-google-apologizes-over-its-pixel-influencer-demands/#respond Tue, 20 Aug 2024 11:00:06 +0000 https://victoryscores.org/?p=72405

The relationship between tech companies and influencers can be murky. A recent post on Threads showed part of the sign-up form to receive Pixel devices for influencers and YouTubers, mandating that signees feature Google’s hardware “in place of any competitor mobile devices” or else “we will need to cease the relationship between the brand and the creator.”

First, our Engadget editors didn’t get this when they signed up for review samples for the four (yes, four) new Pixel phones. It transpired this was for the Team Pixel program, set up by Google to communicate with creators and, it seems, send them devices.

Google responded: “The goal of #TeamPixel is to get Pixel devices into the hands of content creators, not press and tech reviewers. We missed the mark with this new language that appeared in the #TeamPixel form yesterday, and it has been removed.”

It’s not yet clear if these Team Pixel members have received a new agreement, but will the demands remain, just not baked into a Google form or contract? The company is sending devices out so creators can try out (and talk up) the Pixel 9 series — if they don’t, Google may fail to see the point.

Amazon's new Echo Spot drops to $55 https://victoryscores.org/amazons-new-echo-spot-drops-to-55/ https://victoryscores.org/amazons-new-echo-spot-drops-to-55/#respond Tue, 20 Aug 2024 10:58:13 +0000 https://victoryscores.org/?p=72402

The latest incarnation of Amazon’s Echo Spot is back on sale. The smart alarm clock has dropped from $80 to $55. The device was available for $45 during an introductory/Prime Day sale in July, but this is the lowest that the Echo Spot has dipped to since then.

The new model has a sharper display and better sound compared with the original one, Amazon claims (the company canned the first Echo Spot in 2019, two years after its debut). The front face of the new Echo Spot is split almost in half with a display up top and speaker at the bottom. Unlike the original model, there’s no camera in this one, which is a welcome move. It always seemed odd for Amazon to include one in something many people use as a bedside device.

Amazon’s revived Echo Spot is back on sale, this time for $55.

$55 at Amazon

The Echo Spot has Alexa integration, of course. You can use the voice assistant to play music, control smart home devices and create a routine for waking up. The display can show you information such as the title of the song that’s playing, weather details and, naturally, the time of day.

There are a couple of other Echo devices on sale at the moment, including the Echo Show 5. The 2023 model is a third off at $60. It’s one of our favorite Alexa-powered smart displays, and it can work as an alarm clock too (the tap-to-snooze feature is very handy for those desiring a few more minutes of shut-eye). The Echo Show 5 does have a built-in camera, but there’s a physical shutter you can use to block it.

Meanwhile, an Echo Dot can be yours for $30. That’s 20 bucks off the regular price. This is our pick for the best smart speaker that costs under $50, so the value for money is even better thanks to this sale.

Microsoft apps on MacOS apparently have some serious security flaws https://victoryscores.org/microsoft-apps-on-macos-apparently-have-some-serious-security-flaws/ https://victoryscores.org/microsoft-apps-on-macos-apparently-have-some-serious-security-flaws/#respond Tue, 20 Aug 2024 10:56:40 +0000 https://victoryscores.org/?p=72399

A number of Microsoft productivity apps, built for the macOS operating system, are vulnerable in a way that allows hackers to steal sensitive data, record everything the user is doing on the device, record audio and video, and further escalate privileges.

This is according to a new report from cybersecurity researchers at Cisco Talos, who said the vulnerabilities they discovered revolve around the way permissions are handled on macOS. In layman’s terms, the first time an app needs access to, for example, the microphone, it will ask the user for explicit permission. After that, the access remains enabled until the user, once again, explicitly denies it.

Therefore, by hunting for apps that have already been granted extensive permissions, threat actors can run malicious operations on the target endpoint, the researchers concluded.

Microsoft app flaws

To that end, the team say they have identified eight vulnerabilities affecting six of Microsoft’s applications:

CVE-2024-42220 (Outlook)CVE-2024-42004 (Teams – work or school) (main app)CVE-2024-39804 (PowerPoint)CVE-2024-41159 (OneNote)CVE-2024-43106 (Excel)CVE-2024-41165 (Word)CVE-2024-41145 (Teams – work or school) (WebView.app helper app)CVE-2024-41138 (Teams – work or school) (com.microsoft.teams2.modulehost.app)

While this may seem to be a major concern, Microsoft is under a different impression. The company told the researchers that there are too many variables, making exploiting these flaws highly unlikely.

As a result, the company has no plans to patch the flaws, stating, “Microsoft considers these issues low risk, and some of their applications, they claim, need to allow loading of unsigned libraries to support plugins and have declined to fix the issues,” the researchers said in the blog post.

However The Register has reported Microsoft has updated its Teams apps, and OneNote, to remove the feature that allowed library injection, which was at the very core of the issue.

Apple Podcasts now has a useful web interface for browsing and listening to shows https://victoryscores.org/apple-podcasts-now-has-a-useful-web-interface-for-browsing-and-listening-to-shows/ https://victoryscores.org/apple-podcasts-now-has-a-useful-web-interface-for-browsing-and-listening-to-shows/#respond Tue, 20 Aug 2024 10:54:41 +0000 https://victoryscores.org/?p=72396

Apple has just given podcasts listeners an improved way to stream shows from its library on any device. Starting today, the version of Apple Podcasts on the web has a look and feature set that more akin to the company’s standalone app. Not only is the platform accessible on any device via the web, but you’ll get more tools beyond simply playing episodes — even if you don’t have desktop or mobile app installed.

Through the web interface that looks similar to what you’d see inside the full app, you’ll be able to browse shows, access your library, view top charts, purchase subscriptions and more. Apple Podcasts on the web syncs everything with your Apple account, so play progress, favorite shows and subscriptions remain up to date across devices. If you don’t have an Apple log-in, the company says you’ll be able to browse and listen, but that’s it. Before this, you could listen to podcasts on the web, but you didn’t have access to your library or any advanced tools most users want from a service.

Apple says the expanded Podcasts on the web is available in more than 170 countries on “all major web browsers,” including Safari, Chrome, Edge and FireFox.

Price, not AI, is the deal-breaker for potential iPhone 16 buyers https://victoryscores.org/price-not-ai-is-the-deal-breaker-for-potential-iphone-16-buyers/ https://victoryscores.org/price-not-ai-is-the-deal-breaker-for-potential-iphone-16-buyers/#respond Tue, 20 Aug 2024 10:52:45 +0000 https://victoryscores.org/?p=72393

The main trend in smartphones currently is AI, as exemplified by the AI-packed Google Pixel 9 line, but for iPhone owners, AI might not be such a big deal.

This is according to a survey of over 2,000 US adults that own iPhones, carried out by SellCell (via 9to5Mac).

Despite Apple doing its best to hype Apple Intelligence earlier this year, the survey found that just 21.9% of respondents considered AI to be the most important factor in whether they upgrade, and 82.1% said they would be happy to wait an extra month after launch for the AI features to start rolling out.

So what are the main things that could tempt people to upgrade to an iPhone 16? Well, according to this survey, affordability that’s the main factor, which – since Apple has never been overly known for competitive prices – could be a bad sign for the upcoming phones.

That said, this is still only the top factor for 30.9% of respondents, so there’s no clear consensus on the most important aspect.

In second place there’s the hope of a new thermal design to combat overheating, which is likely a response to the overheating issues some iPhone 15 Pro models initially exhibited.

Then in third place it’s AI, so there is at least some interest in this, and that’s followed by a faster chipset, and then the rumored larger screen sizes on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

But while only 19.3% of respondents considered larger screen sizes to be the most important rumored feature of the iPhone 16 line, 54.9% said they would like a larger iPhone, while only 12.9% claimed to be holding out for a new compact model.

For many Apple fans, the iPhone 15 Pro Max isn’t big enough Buttons are seemingly boring

The rumored Capture button and the likely presence of the Action button on all four upcoming phones seemingly hasn’t excited many potential purchasers though, with just 19% claiming the latter is the most important factor in their purchase, and 17.7% pointing to the former.

Perhaps unsurprisingly there’s even less interest in Wi-Fi 7 or in a vertical camera lens arrangement for the standard models, but the potential for new iPhone 16 colors was the thing that the fewest respondents saw as the main factor in a potential purchase. Which is fair enough, especially if you’re just going to be putting the phone in a case anyway.

But despite a fairly muted response to some of the most high profile rumored features, 61.9% of respondents said they probably would buy a model in the iPhone 16 line, and among those who claim they won’t the main reasons are the cost, and them being happy with their current iPhone.

Still, while there’s some interesting data here, it’s worth remembering this is a tiny sample size relative to all the people who might consider buying an iPhone 16, and it also only accounts for the US – which is Apple’s biggest market – and only existing iPhone owners. So this definitely won’t tell the whole story.
